Hi… readers. What’s up? Are you healthy
and glad today? I hope so. Anyway I have a question to you, have you ever
attended a seminar? I think most of you would say yes and perhaps some of you
would say never. What is your interpretation toward a seminar? I guess most of
you will say it is boring activity, make sleepy easily, and wasting time. Is it
true or not? Haha. Exactly it is false. Because I just attend a seminar which
is fun and very useful to broaden our knowledge. Do you wanna know more? Check
it out then.
Well this seminar is talking about authentic literacy. It was explained by a foreign speaker. He is Gaylord Anderson, Education Consultant Tacoma, WA USA. Have you ever heard about authentic literacy? Authentic literacy is talking about “READING” for enjoyment and to learn, “WRITING” to communicate ideas and feelings using written language, and “SPEAKING” to communicate ideas using oral language.
Actually I won’t talk more about how the seminar is going and what authentic literacy is but more to what I’ve learned from this seminar. Well the first thing that I learned is the way of asking attention from your student and making them silent immediately in seconds. Just imagine that you are in a noisy class then the thing that you should do is raise your right hand up and in the same time asked “MAY I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE?” out loud but do not scream. You will realize it works, they would be quite immediately. Another thing related to this is when you just found two of your student talking each other while you are explaining the material, it is better for you to do this. Walking toward them slowly while explaining, keep your eyes to them then said “EXCUSE ME!” with low voice so you would not embarrass them in front others. Just believe, they would lock their mouth then. No noise anymore. Hahaha.
Another thing that I got is a strategy when teach reading skill to the learners. I will try this strategy when I am being a teacher one day. I would ask my student to read what they want to read rather than what the teacher wants to read. It means I would ask them to choose their reading material based on their interest. Then the next thing is asking them to found difficult words or new vocabularies. In the end ask them to find the meaning of it. It is important to remember, when they were felt relax they will absorb more. If you give your student a bored book, they will be stressful. So please don’t do that for the sake of God. Hehe.
Still talking about reading, also, you can use close reading strategy. Anyone know this strategy? Close reading is read and reread for a purpose with pen or highlighter in hand. The advantage, it will be easier for you in reviewing so many important points in the reading material itself. To remind you important points, it is also can be done by writing some notes in your paper margin. It will deepen your reading comprehension.
Also, creating a print-rich environment at home and in the classroom is another good strategy to encourage student to read. One possibility that is perhaps can be done is builds a small classroom library corner in each rooms. Magazine, comics and novels are could be a good choice to put in.

Blogging on the computer also can be the best way to improve the student’s reading ability, especially for elementary students.
Actually teachers and parents can find several ways to encourage the learners to love reading. It can be concluded that the ways that can be used are free reading, closed reading, print-rich environment, and blogging. No tense, no stressful, be relax, and eventually absorb more. All of this I got from The Power of Authentic Literacy’s Seminar in seminar room of language and art faculty on 7th of March 2014. Dapus
